Dirty Facts about Ocean Pollution
Our oceans are alarmingly polluted, with staggering facts illustrating the severity of the crisis. This pollution is causing immense harm to marine life and ecosystems. Some of the key points include the annual death of around 100,000 marine animals due to plastic entanglement, the presence of a mind-boggling 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic trash in our oceans, and the existence of an ocean garbage patch twice the size of Texas, highlighting the colossal scale of the issue. Human activities have created "dead zones" in the oceans where life cannot thrive, and even the Mariana Trench, the deepest part of the ocean, isn't spared from plastic pollution.
Shockingly, the plastic present in the ocean could blanket the Earth 400 times over. Moreover, many countries are shifting their ocean pollution problems elsewhere, exacerbating the global issue. Single-use plastics, such as straws, cups, and utensils, are major culprits, and a staggering 80% of ocean trash originates from land-based activities, like improper waste disposal and littering. Additionally, ocean acidity is rising due to carbon emissions from burning fossil fuels, further endangering marine life. It's clear that action is needed and is being taken to combat pollution and save the ocean’s marine life.
