Seahorses

Seahorses are fish with an unusual upright swimming style, closely related to pipefishes and seadragons. They come in various sizes, ranging from thumbnail-sized to over a foot long, with 47 species and new ones still being discovered. Seahorses are adept at camouflage, making them difficult to spot in their natural habitats like coral reefs and seagrass beds. Unfortunately, illegal capture for traditional medicine and home aquariums poses a significant threat to their populations.

These unique creatures possess prehensile tails, allowing them to grip onto objects, such as seagrass, for resting and travel. Seahorses also engage in intricate daily dances with their mates, and males carry the eggs in a pouch on their bodies, taking on the role of childbirth. These distinctive traits make seahorses fascinating but also vulnerable, emphasizing the need for conservation efforts to protect their populations.
